Stretcher Placement

The pressure to finish the kitchen table has increased, we moved the old table out to MsBubba's studio so all we have is a folding table to eat on.

I clamped the stretcher to the leg uprights to get a feel for stretcher placement.

The stretcher is about 70mm to 80mm high in this photo.

Four mortises, clean up the two bases units, glue up a slab and this sucker will be finished.

  1. I always like stretchers as low as possible as they act as foot rest :)

    1. Lionel,

You and MsBubba think alike. I expect it will end up closer to 80mm lower than 70mm. When I first started thinking about the table I planned on it being, how to put it, a little rough and primitive. Now I'm not so sure. I guess that will be decided once I start to clean the base units up.

  2. It doesn't look like it will be a knee knocker but to my eye it looks to high. I like something around the center of the ends.

    1. Ralph,

I expect the table top will stop any sitting forward enough for the knees to touch. It will be lower so if that is a problem it will be a shin knocker.

  3. I tend to think that placing the stretcher at mid height would give the best racking resistance.

    1. Sylvain,

My thoughts as well. The stretcher center line should end up being about 25mm above the upright center.
