New To Me 10 1/2 Stanley

I'd been looking for awhile. I really wanted a 10 1/4 but they are really rare.

Cutter wasn't too bad, about 10 minutes on the stones and it is reasonably sharp. No cracks that I can find. While I don't know these planes well enough to type them my guess is a pre-1930 plane.

MsBubba had a flight home booked for Friday. Over the last couple of days her Dad has fallen a couple of times and just in general is going downhill quickly. She decided to stay a couple more weeks, I hope it is that short but I have my doubts. I kinda miss the old gal, but what ever you do don't tell her.

  1. The 10 1/2 is roughly the same size as the #3 and it can be used as a smoother. My 10 1/2 is the only plane I am having problems findings a spare Stanley iron for. I just don't see them for sale anywhere. Ashley Iles sells a thicker replacement iron for it I think.

    1. Ralph,

While the iron is usable I've ordered a AI replacement.

Mostly I wanted the 10 1/2 for trimming the long stretcher tenons on my workbench builds. The biggest problem with the hunt was finding one that looked good but was reasonable. If this one doesn't work I'll get the LN or LV version. I would guess the LV version would be the best fit although I've never worked with bevel up planes and it is a little big.

    Hock sells the blades

For the amount of use these get, a non-pitted blade should last years with what looks like a used up blade. I see shoulder planes with the bevels reaching the shoulder of the blade but they still work.

    1. Steve,

I did a quick look at Hock but didn't see them, which isn't unusual for me to miss what I'm looking for. Thanks for the link. There is some blade left and it isn't too bad. The other aspect anything I will use the 10 1/2 on will be hidden but I will most likely replace it. In my hands I expect the plane to be pretty much a one trick pony.

  3. Flatten the sole, I have seen these with quite a lot of wear or deformity. You will love it sizing big tenons!

    1. Thanks Will,

I haven't had time to check the sole but it will be first up. Yeah, that's the reason for it, watching you convinced me I needed one.

    1. Thanks Steve,

At this stage it can only end one way. George was and is a mean old cuss, I was one of the few people he liked back in the day. His living as long as he has might be proof there is a god because the only reason he still lives must be god, she and the devil, are fighting over who has to take him.

I think MsBubba has had enough and is coming home next weekend, I hope so, I miss having the old gal around and I need the adult supervision.
