The last of the slats/slabs are in the clamps. Towards the end those suckers were heavy for just one old fart to move around. MsBubba made it home just in time to help with the final glue up and moving everything in place to clamp. What a difference four hands and arms make.
Tomorrow a friend will help me take the slab out of the clamps, check it for wind and run it through the planer until everything that is not a slab is removed.
In the clamps:

I should have mentioned it on the first glue up post. You obviously us the rosin paper in anticipation of glue dripping all over. Since most of your clamps are on one side of the assembly you can roll the top over to keep all the clamp bars clean.
ReplyDeleteI use pipe clamps alternating so I get glue on my clamps no matter what.
Steve,
DeleteOn this glue up the only face that mattered is the one on the clamps which is the reason for all the clamps being on one side. There was still a little slippage but not much. A couple of passes with the jack and the slab was ready for the planer. Glue on my clamps is just part life. Stuff happens.

Oh, my back hurt just looking at it, but will sure make some HD bench top
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your poor unsuspecting friend :-)

Bob,
DeleteYou don't have a clue, that is one heavy sucker. We ended up calling a neighbor over to help as well. As much as I enjoy building benches, I'm getting too old and weak to handle heavy slabs. There is not a part of me that doesn't ache.

Congrats on the top glue up. It looks to be an awesome top.
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Joe
Joe,
DeleteThanks, it came out looking pretty good with only a couple of places I'll have to dress with a plane.
