Dave's Shaves

I've spent my life ridding in the short bus, being late to every party. In other words, every time I make a new discovery everyone else has known it for years. Forgive me if this is old hat but I've recently discovered low angle, bevel up, wood body spokeshaves.

I bought one from The Windsor Workshop in UK several months ago and in a cartoon world the blue birds would be singing and there would be rainbows in the sky. What a difference between it and the bevel down shaves like those made by LN or LV.

Bottom line I've been dealing with Dave's Shaves for a full set of wood body shaves. A full review once they arrive.

I have one from Woodjoy and it's great. Practically weightless.

I also have a vintage one that I've never used because the tang adjust was offputting to me. Very different experience from the bevel down variety.

  2. Steve,

I have the Woodjoy cigar shave. BTW, I'm not sure what is going on with Woodjoy, I looked at their site the other day and most of their tools were discontinued.

  3. My all time favourite spokeshaves, the wooden variety are a different animal due to the different angle of attack.

If you like them (and who doesn't :-) pick up a spokeshave kits at LV and makes your own. A fun project

Bob, with an kit or two somewhere

    1. Bob,

I thought about it but decided to let the pros do it. That way I know if the tool doesn't work whose at fault :-).

  4. 3 weeks ago, Paul Sellers made a video "Spoke shave Q & A" which addresses wooden and metal spoke shaves.
Including what to do if the wooden tang spoke shave doesn't retain any more its setting.

  5. I've been wanting to make a wooden spokeshave for a long time. Both Sellers and Bob Rozaieski have videos about making one. Sometime soon I hope ... Looking forward to your thoughts on the ones you order.

    1. Matt,

I expect it will be several weeks as Dave make his shaves to order. Once I get my grubby hands on 'em you folks will be the first to know.
