I have to go in today to finish the check ride started last week. Once home, if I'm not too pissed to work, I'll take the bench apart and clean up the base and stretchers. I'm still thinking about painting the base, if I do the first step will be a coat of shellac.

I now clearly see the difference between a transportable workbench (like the Paul Sellers one which can be knocked down) and a portable one. This reminds me the first transportable PC which were like a sewing machine (before those were mostly in plastic).
ReplyDeleteThat is what sold me on the build....At first I was using a Ram 2500 as a Toad and I planed on just, with help, sliding an English style bench bench into the bed of the truck. I wasn't happy with that option but it was the best I could come up with. Then the kids needed the Ram and we figured their Honda Fit would make a better Toad so the slide into the bed of the truck option was gone. Long way around to yes the Moravian bench is portable vs. transportable.
ReplyDeleteGood observation,

FWIW, I vote no on paint. Of course, I didn't think you should paint the toybox either and it turned out nice.
ReplyDeleteAbout how much does the bench weigh?
You use shellac under milk paint? I didn't think milk paint liked to go on other coatings.
ReplyDeleteBench looks great. Is your plan to use the bench to make things while camping? Rough ground may help keep the bench in place as opposed to pushing it around your garage floor.

Andy,
ReplyDeleteYou win this one :-). I just finished putting a coat of Danish Oil on the base. After clean up and looking at it I decided to live with all the tear out chip out and associated pukey. It is a work bench after all.
I'm not sure how much it weights but I expect around 100 lbs. with slab on top. MsBubba and I can move it around with little effort. Someone figured out the board feet of the Beech slab should weigh slightly less than 40 lbs and the base can't weigh much more.

Steve,
ReplyDeleteThat's what I figure, dirt makes a great stop. It was going to be a well diluted seal coat but I changed my mind and started putting on oil.
