Slab is Attached

I set the Slab a few minutes ago. I had to give it a go so I clamped a makeshift stop to the slab and grabbed a hunk of Sapele scrap and the #5 Jack. Not bad, in fact damn good. Bench was rock solid until I started testing to see when it would slide. I did make it move a little but I would never take a shaven as thick even with the scrub plane. Weight does make a difference, you could push with a Jeep and the English/French bench wouldn't move but it also takes a derrick and a PTO to lift that sucker.

More clean up, have I ever told you how much I dislike working with construction grade DF, make a tool tray for the off side, and install the vise once the screw shows up. The fat lady is warming up backstage.

  1. Attach a rubber sole to the legs and it would be unmoveable.... and still portable :-)

  2. Nice. Looks plenty large for being a knock-down-bring-in-the-RV workbench. Will the top be screwed to the leg assembly top rails?

  4. Bob,

I expect that would work. We have had a great Monsoon but forecast is for a few dry days then the Monsoon should return. With out the rains the desert is really hot.

  5. Matt,

    Thanks.

No the whole thing can be put together or taken apart with just a mallet. The slab is held in place by 4 5/8" dowels glued into the base and mated with holes on the bottom of the slab. The slab is easily removed and replaced. There are no screws, lag bolts, or any metal fasters on the bench. The bench is a near copy of one in NC that was used as a job site bench. The Moravian's were pretty sharp, when I first started building the bench it was just a bench but the farther I got into the build the more I appreciated the thought and engineering that went into it.

  6. Thanks Andy. I had to plane a piece of scrap and chop on some end grain just because and both operations went well.

  7. What kind of wood is the slab? Oh, almost forgot - what will the fat lady be singing?

  8. Ralph,

European Beech. Here in Tucson it is cheap, with discount less than $5 USD a board foot and it makes a great bench top. My main bench is made of it and other than stupid wood tricks when first dimensioned a great wood to work and use.

Sounds like she is working on a 'Pops" program something like "You wrecked my house, you wrecked my car, you wrecked my heart and left the peaces pieces scattered on the lawn". Or maybe that is just an ear worm.
