Grinding Station

I set up a new Grinding station today. Picked up a CBN wheel the other day, Amazon delivered a Tormek grinder jig, I added a couple of hunks of ply and I have a new faster way to grind the bevel. Is it better than the T-7, we will see but one thing is for sure....It's faster.

The Tormek BGM-100 kit is worth the money, it has everything you need except the ply:

  3. Ditto what Andy said Ken. Do you have much experience with the CBN wheels? I've never heard of them and of course there are bewildering number to choose from (checked Amazon). You have given me some good ideas for my sharpening bench.

  4. Ralph,

Not a bit, this is the first one I've had. The one thing I heard is to stay away from the diamond ones as the diamonds in some way combine with the carbon in the steel. Not a clue if that is correct. Bottom line while I thank the Tormek is great, I like the jigs and how easy it is to get a consistent bevel, the Tormek uses water and I keep trying to get rid of water. I doubt I can ever totally stop using water but I expect with this rig I can use it and the Spydercos to do 90/95% of my sharpening and use the Shaptons when only the sharpest will do. That doesn't, the need for Shapton sharp, doesn't come up often.

  5. Hi Ken
I was going to order one of these but I just read a post by Derek on SMC about these CBN wheels. He is getting a wavy edge with it now. He wrote a good review about ii in December and today it ain't doing what it was doing.

  6. Ralph,

Yep, I saw Derek's post. I don't know if the problem is with his brand, the rounded sides, or just a CBN problem as it wears. Mine has square sides and I checked it after reading Derek's post, the light between the straight edge and my wheel was very even. and in use it is fine but it is also new. Hold off for now and let me get a few miles on mine to see if Derek's problem is common.
