I'm not sure if the new bench will stay in the secondary bench position or if it will swap positions with the French/English bench.
I added ledgers to the long stretchers yesterday in case I decide on installing a lower shelf. I expect I will and it was easy to install the ledgers while the bench was apart for cleaning up the build marks.
Anyway here are some photos:
I don't know who is happier about it being finished MsBubba or me.

Thing of beauty... Love it

Oh, and matching angles on the shave horse, nice touch :-)
ReplyDeleteBob, sipping a beer, nurturing his back. More clean up done
Thanks Bob,
DeleteWish I could say I planned the matching angles :-). I'm right with you minus the beer, trying to get my blood sugar under control getting old is not fun.

Really nice. You could leave the small Moravian in Houston with a small kit so you will have an oasis there. That would free up space for your next bench build, too.
ReplyDeleteSteve,
ReplyDeleteThanks, too close to the birthing to think about the next one but who knows. I have already put it to work flatting a chair seat blank. The chair may be a slow build with an initial line starting tomorrow and then Houston until after the 1st. Whatever I'm looking forward to a build that will not kill my back.

Beautiful bench! Would you have a list of the changes to the original Will Myers' design? I see beefier legs and long stretchers. How big did you go? This seems like a perfect shop bench, there's something about the Moravian lines that just do it for me.
ReplyDeleteGreat work!
Thanks,
DeleteWhat did I change, short answer not much other than dimensions. After the first couple of builds I realized what a favor Will did in following the original so closely. The original builders knew what they were doing. Each joint is the quickest and easiest to make that does not compromise the build. The bench is really paired down to just the essence of bench, change anything and I expect the bench would lose that perfection.

I missed answering the size question. The bench is ~2200mm (just over 7') long and ~700mm (28") wide. The slab is ~460mm (18") wide. The legs and long stretchers are from 16/4 stock. Short stretchers 8/4 stock.
DeleteI'm not sure what it weights but I expect north of 200lb. but less than 300lb.
