Other than maybe a little Tung oil the shavehorse is finished and works a treat. I may need to remake the swing arm after some use, it works fine but I do not trust the Honey Locust to not split out and I had rather make a new one in the shop vs. on the road.

Ralph asked for photos of the metal rod (pivot pin). At the time it was straight and long because I had not sized it or shaped it. A close up of the pivot pin:
If you do chairs, spindles, spoons, or just like to turn bigger hunks of wood into smaller hunks a shavehouse is a good tool to have. If I had been working with a better wood instead of trying to rid the wood pile of future firewood it would have been an easy, quick build and most important it will break down and store in a corner with the portable Moravian workbench.
One last thought, I've used twin swing arms and now this dumb head, first impression is the dumb head is a better system.
I had thought the rod was tied into the foot pedal somehow.
ReplyDeleteRalph,
DeleteThe dumbhead allows the pivot point to be higher which in turn increases the force of the dumbhead. I may be proven wrong but I think this is a better system than a twin arm shavehorse. I had to build both to figure it out. The switch is a little faulty but the light will eventually come on.
The biggest problem with a dumbhead horse is all that force is where the dumbhead and the swing arm connect (reason for the "T" strap). With a twin arm type horse the pivot is lower, also most of the force on the upper jaw is split between the the twin arms and goes thru a large metal bolt given a much stronger connection to handle less force.

Interesting comments. Make a lot more sense now.
ReplyDeleteBob, with the grand kids at home. The youngest has set up her beauty salon and we are doing nails. Whish me luck :-)
Bob,
DeleteJust build photos do not really tell the story.
So "Gramps" will have red nails for a few days :-). We haven't seen our two since this crap started but will in June when the new one is born. Looking forward to it.
