First Coat of Finish

The first coat of finish is drying:

I'm using Waterlux Original for the slab and tung oil for the base. The Waterlux is supposed to look like Tung oil when finished, it doesn't, but it resists water stains and is easily repaired if needed. I used in on my bathroom vanity and after three or four years it still looks good.

It normally takes 3 or 4 coats and needs 24 hours to dry between coats so it will be the weekend before the fat lady breaks into song.

BTW, I decided on belts and suspenders.  I added "Z" clips as well as pegs to hold the table top. Prophylactic taking care of the problem of the top coming lose when MsBubba moves it around the house, which happens often and I would hear about it each time it came loose.

I will not know for sure if I met my design goals until it is in use but I think it will. I wanted a smaller but sturdy table, one that is good for 2 couples and maybe a third in a pinch. I wanted a vernacular, outsider, rustic (whatever you want to call it), look. One that after several years of abuse still looks ok.

  1. I love the way an oil finish pops wood.

    1. Ralph,

While I like most oil finishes, Tung oil is my favorite. The reason for the Waterlux is because this is a kitchen table and I want to try for a little more protection.

Hope the furnace install goes well.

    1. Bob,

I've started to remember to put one of the aprons on. Doing so has cut the evil eye down, still get it but not as often.

I expect another day or so before moving it to the kitchen. MsBubba sat at it this AM and gave a thumbs up.

    1. Lionel,

Thanks, I think it will work but whatever it is better than the one it is replacing.

  4. I'll bet applying the finish outdoors really helps it dry fast in your climate.

    1. Matt,

Things do tend to dry out quickly here in the desert. This finish is a little slow to dry and unlike with oil you have to let it. Another day, maybe two and I'll call finished.

It is still early and anything not in the shade is already too hot to touch. If trends continue, in a few years the AZ deserts will be too hot to sustain life during the summer.

I know how to live in the desert and still a couple of days ago I had a mild case of heat exhaustion because I continued to work after noon.

    1. Thanks Sylvain,

The table is in the kitchen and just needs a coat of wax to be finished.

  6. That is a beautiful table and one I might copy if you don't mind. I like Waterlox except for one thing: the smell. It's bad and sticks around.

  7. Andy,

Thank you, I'm pretty happy with it. Copy away I'll love to see your version.

I do not normally use Waterlux for that and other reasons, mostly because it is a several day process to get to final finish and it doesn't really look like an oil finish. It gets close, closer than anything else I've found that offers good protection. I used it on my bath vanity 5 or 6 years ago and the vanity's top still looks good and all I've done is wipe it down after use which I would do whatever the top was made of.

I hope the table top fairs as well.
