Broken record I know but, what's not to love. This bench stays stacked in a corner of the shop where it takes up maybe 3 square feet of floor space. Need a bench somewhere in the yard and it takes one man less than 5 minutes to set up. It is almost as easy as a Workmate. I really think MsBubba could take it out of the corner and do it by herself. Add in rock solid and fast and cheap to build, like I said broken record.
I have a over 400 lb. French bench in my shop, most of my work is done on the full sized Moravian that weights, best guess, slightly more than 200 lbs. and is every bit as stable as the French bench.

Mighty fine looking bench!

Thanks Jonas,
DeleteSometimes it is easier to take the bench to the work than taking the work to the bench. How is the sailing?

Hi Ken
DeleteThe sailing is really fine :-)
We have a period of evening cruises with a lot of locals at the moment. That helps to ensure that we have an incredible "back-up" from the local community which is essential to us.
After all we are a ship that represents the city of Bergen and the surrounding area, so people should ideally feel some sort of ownership of the ship.

Will Myers assemble it in 58" at a cool pace.
ReplyDeleteIt is certainly much more stable than a workmate. One need to put a foot on the workmate to prevent it from moving, which unsettle one'stance.
How heavy is the one on the photo?
Sylvain
Sylvain,
DeleteNo one part of it weights as much as a bag of water softener salt (about 40 lbs). There are 7 discrete parts, of the 7 only the slab weights that much, the rest are less that 25 lbs. Long way around to: best guess slightly over 120lbs but not over 150lbs total.

I have one and like it very much as my primary bench. Sometimes I do wish the top was wider. That would make the use of a holdfast and does foot easier. I may replace the tool well. Does yours have the well? Maybe I will just laminate some construction wood for the second top to replace the well
ReplyDeleteYes all my Moravian benches have a tool tray. I built one with a double slab but soon replaced the rear slab with a tool tray. The rear slab was too small and didn't really bring anything to the table, If you do not need or want the bench to be easily portable I expect a single wider slab would be fine.
