Sharpening my kitchen knifes on the shop Tormek is pretty easy and fast but it does take set-up time and a little skill. The new T-1 addresses both of those with the set-up of just setting the desired angle of between 8* and 22* and the skill level is even lower and mostly applies to the honing phase.
Tormek T-1:
With my shop Tormek I can sharpen most edge tools. There are a few exceptions like most Japanese chisels and I've had a love/hate relationship with it for how many years it has been in the shop. BTW that has mostly been a "hate" relationship and I've come close to selling the Tormek many times over the years. All that changed a year or so ago when I had a "flat head" moment and realized the Tormek could gave a perfect "Unicorn" edge. I just hadn't used the machine correctly. After years of preaching "freehand" I now will use the Tormek if the tool will fit in one of the Tormek jigs. It gives a better edge (Unicorn) and is damn near as fast.
The T-1 is a one trick pony but I can see that one trick being pretty handy. At $350 USD I probably will not pull the trigger but damn it sure is tempting.
If I can find the room and figure out a way to safely transport the shop Tormek it will go to Oregon with us for the Summer. The T-1 would take care of that problem. It's good to have sharp knifes.
I'm still trying to clean and organize the shop enough to work in, not sure if it will be done in time to make anything before we leave but there is hope.
See you on down the road,
ken
Hi Ken
ReplyDeleteI think you deserve a Tormek!
I can't remember reading about you getting yourself a retirement gift other than the plants. So I'd say go for it. You could justify the purchase with the ability to sharpen the pruning scissors.

Jonas,
DeleteI need you to talk to MsBubba :-). I do like the way you think.

If you had a Tormek and a "Knives Sharpened $5" sign in a campground for the summer you could clean up.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a guy in a van that sharpened whatever could be sharpened (not in a campground). Now that I think of it he must be retired since I haven't seen the truck in some time.
I noticed your new sites and content have sprouted but the comments aren't working.
Steve,
DeleteKnives are not a problem, all the other things folks want sharpened are what kicks your ass. BTW, I've just about got the Ax/Hatchet thing down on the T-7, scissors next.
Please try again and if it doesn't work let me know. I just went on line and posted a comment. Of course it could be because I own the site that it worked.
Thanks,
ken
Hi Ken,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't post comments using Firefox on a Mac but this is using Opera. The firefox has more restricted cookie settings than my Opera and I suspect that is the problem.
What surprises me is that I can post on one of your blogs but not the others. You probably have some settings that differ on your end as well.
Doh! I just noticed that I can only post through my Google account whereas I can just use my name in your woodworking forum. I copied and pasted this from wakebakegrow to let you know.
Ohhh a new sharpening tool, just what you need 😁 sure look pretty. Is that a CBN wheel i see?
ReplyDeleteBob, taking a break from organizing garage.
Bob,
DeleteDiamond, 600 grit with a honing wheel that does not need honing compound.
My shop organizing is never ending and I expect it will still be at the starting stage when we leave for Oregon. That said, I've already boxes on boxes of tools and junk that need a new home, be it trash or sold. Of course the boxes of junk just add to the current clutter, there is no win.

Comments...
ReplyDeleteIt's not Firefox necessarily since this comment is being posted via FF.
WB and WBG did not have the comment function this morning and I just did a Firefox update. Firefox changes faster than New England weather.
Thanks Steve,
DeleteI'll try to fix from my end, you give me things to check.

I had to look it up online, sure look like the perfect machine for sharpening kitchen knife. May seems expensive, but there are not many machines i would trust some of my kitchen knifes with. That one, i would probably, its a Tormek.
ReplyDeleteBob, who is finally winning his battle with his shops spaces... i think
If I didn't have a T-7 one would be on its way. MsBubba is pretty understanding but there are limits.
DeleteSo far my shop clean up has been the two steps forward, three back routine. It looks worse than the day we returned from Oregon and time is running out before leaving again.
